A transfer switch decides which source your house is connected to, and — more importantly — guarantees it is never connected to both. That guarantee is the whole reason the device exists and the reason a generator cannot legally be wired in without one.
The danger it prevents
A generator connected to house wiring while the utility service is still connected will push power back out through the service, onto the lines outside, and through the neighbourhood transformer — which steps it back up to distribution voltage.
Utility crews working to restore a line that everyone believes is dead are then working on an energised line. This is called backfeeding and it is the reason improvised generator connections are treated as seriously as they are.
How it guarantees it
Mechanically. The switch is built so that the utility position and the generator position are physically incapable of being closed at the same time — an interlock, not a rule or a procedure someone has to remember.
That is why a transfer switch rather than a pair of breakers and good intentions. The safety comes from the mechanism, not the operator.
Manual and automatic
A manual switch requires someone to go and throw it when the power fails. An automatic one senses the outage, starts the generator, waits for it to stabilise, and transfers — then reverses the whole sequence when utility power returns.
Automatic is what makes a standby generator standby. It also means the house transfers while nobody is home, which for a furnace in February or a sump pump in April is generally the point.
Whole-house or essential circuits
A switch can transfer the entire panel or only a subpanel of selected circuits. The second is cheaper and needs a smaller generator, at the cost of deciding in advance which circuits matter — usually heat, refrigeration, the sump, and some lighting.
That decision is made at install and is awkward to revisit, so it is worth more thought than it usually gets.
How to spot it in your house
- Look for a second enclosure near the main panel with a lever or rotary switch and positions marked something like LINE, OFF and GEN.
- An automatic unit has no lever and usually a small status display or indicator lights.
- An inlet on an exterior wall for plugging in a portable generator should always lead to a transfer switch or an interlock — if it appears to connect directly to the panel, have it looked at.
