Also called circuit breaker

A switch in your panel that cuts a single circuit when it draws more current than the wire behind it can safely carry.

A breaker is a switch that opens itself. Every circuit in the house runs through one, and the thing worth understanding is what it is actually protecting, because it is not what most people assume.

It protects the wire, not the device

A 15A breaker exists because the wire behind it is rated for 15 amps. Push more than that through and the wire heats up inside a wall where nobody can see it. The breaker opens before that happens.

It is not protecting your television, and it is not protecting you. That is why GFCIs and AFCIs exist as separate devices: they watch for things an overcurrent breaker cannot see.

Two ways it trips

Slowly, from sustained overload — too much plugged into one circuit, drawing more than its rating for long enough to matter. This is the trip that happens when the space heater and the kettle share a room.

Instantly, from a short circuit, where hot touches neutral or ground directly and current spikes enormously for a fraction of a second. Same breaker, two different mechanisms inside it.

Repeat tripping is information

A breaker that trips once under obvious load has done its job. A breaker that trips again immediately after being reset, with nothing plugged in, is telling you there is a fault in the circuit itself.

The dangerous response is to replace it with a larger one. That does not fix the fault; it raises the threshold at which the wire is allowed to overheat, which is precisely the protection being removed. If a breaker keeps tripping, the circuit needs looking at, not a bigger breaker.

Breakers age

The mechanism is mechanical and the contacts wear, particularly on a circuit that trips often. A breaker that feels loose in the handle, will not stay set, or is warm to the touch has reached the end of its life.

How to spot it in your house

  • A tripped breaker usually sits between on and off rather than fully off — push it firmly to off first, then back on.
  • Feel for warmth across the face of the panel. A breaker noticeably warmer than its neighbours is worth attention.
  • Two wires under one breaker screw is a double-tap and should be corrected.
  • Discolouration or a burnt smell around a breaker is not a wait-and-see finding.
