Main breaker

Also called main disconnect · main switch

The single large breaker at the top of your panel that cuts power to the whole house. Its rating is your service size.

One switch, at the top of the panel, bigger than the rest. It is the only thing in the house that can turn off everything at once, and the number printed on its handle is the answer to the question electricians ask first.

What it protects

Not your appliances. The main breaker protects the service conductors — the heavy cable running from the meter into the panel — from carrying more current than they can shed as heat.

The individual breakers below it do the same job for each branch circuit. The main is simply the one guarding the biggest wire in the building.

It tells you your service size

This is the practical reason to know where it is. A panel can be physically rated for more than the service feeding it, and the label inside the door describes the panel, not the supply. The main breaker is sized to the actual service, so its rating is the number that matters.

If you are filling in a load calculator, planning a charger, or on the phone with an electrician, this is the number they want.

When it trips

Rarely, and it means something. A single circuit overloading trips that circuit's breaker, not the main. A main tripping suggests the whole house genuinely exceeded its service, or that there is a fault upstream of the branch breakers.

Resetting it once to see is reasonable. Resetting it repeatedly is not, because whatever caused it is still there.

Split-bus panels have no main

Some older panels were built without a single main disconnect, using several large breakers across the top instead. There is no one switch that kills everything, which matters in an emergency and matters to anyone working on the system. If yours looks like that, it is worth having assessed.

How to spot it in your house

  • Open the panel door: it is the largest breaker, usually alone at the top, often with its own separate cover.
  • The rating is stamped or printed on the handle — commonly 100 or 200.
  • If there is no single largest breaker and instead a row of big ones across the top, you likely have a split-bus panel.
