The standard naming system for North American plug shapes. NEMA 14-50 is the big 240-volt socket most plug-in car chargers and ranges use.

NEMA numbers are how North America names the physical shape of a plug and socket. They look like part numbers and they function as one: a NEMA 14-50 is a specific arrangement of pins that fits exactly one kind of receptacle and nothing else.

How to read one

The number before the hyphen identifies the configuration — how many conductors, whether there is a ground, and what voltage arrangement. The number after it is the current rating in amps. So a 14-50 is a 50-amp device of configuration 14.

An R suffix means receptacle, a P suffix means plug. NEMA 14-50R is the socket on the wall; 14-50P is the plug on the cord.

The ones you will actually meet

NEMA 5-15 is the ordinary household socket, so common that nobody calls it by name. NEMA 14-50 is the large 240-volt outlet used by electric ranges and, by inheritance, most plug-in EV chargers. NEMA 14-30 and 10-30 turn up on dryers, the older 10-30 having no separate ground.

That last detail matters. Configurations differ not just in size but in whether they carry a ground and a neutral, which is why an adapter between two that look similar can be genuinely unsafe.

Why EV chargers care

A plug-in charger ships with a specific plug and needs the matching receptacle installed. Buying the charger before the outlet exists is fine; buying it and assuming an existing dryer outlet will do is where people come unstuck, because the dryer outlet is usually a different configuration in a different room on a circuit already in use.

How to spot it in your house

  • Look at the receptacle face: an ordinary outlet has two vertical slots and a round ground pin. A 14-50 is large and round with three angled slots and a ground.
  • The NEMA designation is usually moulded into the plastic on the back of a plug or stamped on the receptacle.
  • Never use an adapter to connect a plug to a differently-configured receptacle — the configurations encode what conductors are present, not just the size.
